Big Canoe has four spectacular seasons: mild winters, cool summers, lovely springs and colorful autumns. Many of the amenities include 27 holes of championship golf, a 20,000 sf fitness center, tennis, both indoor and out and fishing. Because the environment of Big Canoe is so extraordinary, a wealth of year round outdoor amenities exists for the privileged residents.
The first known inhabitants of the land were the Paleo Indians who lived here approximately 4000 years ago. The curious mounds or rock they left behind still stand in a 50-acre reserve called the Indian Rocks Park near Lake Petit. The Cherokee Nation occupied the area until they were forced to relocate to Oklahoma in the 1830's when pioneers began to discover gold. A major gold rush occurred in nearby Dahlonega and miners flocked to North Georgia Mountains to seek their fortunes that is, until news from California prompted the gold fever to migrate West. Closer to Big Canoe, another valuable commodity was discovered - marble. Colonel Sam Tate, who ran a hotel on Federal Road, found rich marble deposits on his land. This marble would be used to build the Lincoln Memorial, as well as other monuments. As Tate began mining the marble, he found the valuable stone extended well beyond his own property, so he began buying as much of the surrounding land as he could, including what is now Big Canoe. Marble is still actively mined in Marble Hill and Tate. In fact, you can often find marble along the trails in Big Canoe. Colonel Tate supported a community effort to build a school for the rural mountain residents and also helped them to improve their farms, roads, homes, as well as provide more of a social life for his neighbors. Wolfscratch School was established and operated in the building that now houses the tennis pro shop. Crops were grown on what is now the golf course. Students attempted to grow everything that could successfully be grown in the mountains and established a heard of cattle. The present-day canoe lodge was originally designed to shelter livestock.
Two large free standing chimneys that stand near the Chimney's Lodge are all that remain of a house built in 1913 for several teachers and a school principle. The home was later used as a summer home by Colonel Tate and then as a primary residence for Steve and Lucille Tate. It burned to the ground in 1959. Following the death of Steve Tate, the Wolfscratch property was sold. It was unused for a number of years, until 1972 when Tom Cousins of Cousins Properties of Atlanta and the Sea Pines Corporation of Hilton Head, South Carolina began development of the Big Canoe that exists today. They derived the name from a celebration of the rich history of the Paleo and Cherokee Indians... "Big" emphasizes the largeness of the project, while "Canoe" suggested the scope and far-reaching nature of their vision. Their concept was to develop a quality community that blended human recreation and residence seamlessly with the beauty and quite of the environment. Fifteen years later, in 1987, the Byrne Corporation assumed the development and marketing operations for the community, continuing the tradition of quality established by the original developers while adding to and improving the existing amenities. In 1997, the Greenwood Development Corporation joined forces to ensure that the Big Canoe community would continue to develop as one of the premier private mountain communities in the Southeast.
